There is currently a GP Support Scheme in Cumbria and Lancashire, which provides free confidential and independent counselling and support to all GPs working in the area who are experiencing from problems such as stress, distress, career or partnership issues, addiction, or general unhappiness.
Mentoring is given by GPs in Cumbria and Lancashire who have been trained for this work. GPs needing support, or their colleagues, should contact Abigail Askew, Corporate Services Officer in the LMC office –

Doctors are often bad at seeking help for medical problems, but illness in a GP may jeopardise his or her ability to care for patients. In the health section of the GMC’s document, Good Medical Practice. It is very clear that all doctors should be registered with a GP, outside of their own family, and that they should not treat themselves.
Please contact the office on 01772 863806, if you believe that you might be ill and can’t, for whatever reason, go to your own GP. If you believe that a GP colleague is unwell and not seeking help, please contact the office.
Doctors who run into problems with performance issues or partnership disputes are often ill. This may be physical illness or mental health problems, including alcohol or substance misuse.

NHS GP Health Service – England
The NHS GP Health Service can help with issues relating to a mental health concern, including stress or depression, or an addiction problem, where these might affect a GP’s work. Operating on a self-referral basis, it is provided by health professionals specialising in mental health support to doctors and is available in various locations across England.
Access the service by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 0300 0303 300. Availability is from 8.00am – 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am – 2.00pm Saturday.
Please note the service is not for emergency or crisis issues. These should be directed to mainstream NHS services.
