Substance Misuse Support Worker

  • General Information
    Main areas of work
    1. Work closely with clinicians in a residential environment, in the assessment and care planning process for service users undergoing drug and alcohol detoxification.
    2. To provide support, advice and information to individuals with substance misuse related problems that are undergoing an inpatient detoxification.
    3. To assist in the delivery of care packages to service users based upon an agreed plan.
    4. To monitor any treatment as prescribed by a clinician, providing support and reassurance to the service user on the management, benefits or side effects of treatment and report any concerns/progress to the nursing/medical staff.
    5. To provide support to clients experiencing distress and enable clients to develop strategies to deal effectively with stressors.
    6. To encourage and support service users to adopt safer practices and healthier lifestyles.
    7. Participate in team meetings and task groups, working towards service developments and specific projects within the team as agreed with Registered Manager.
    8. To assist service users, where appropriate, to address their offending behaviour.
    9. Act autonomously in a non-judgmental way in a variety of difficult situations giving the best possible care/first aid e.g. self-harm or injury.
    10. Contribute to the smooth running of the service, carrying out general duties in cooperation with other team members.
    11. Ensure you maintain accurate, contemporaneous, clinical records, making them available to all members of the team in line with the companies Policies and Procedures.
    12. The post holder will actively seek to extend their own knowledge within the substance misuse field.
    13. Participate in annual appraisal identifying personal training needs and agreeing personal development plan with line manager.
    14. Attend and participate in relevant courses including statutory and mandatory updates and continuing professional development as requested by the Registered Manager.
    15. To participate in the induction process both personally and for new members of the team
    16. To participate in the clinical supervision process

    Professional Responsibilities
    1. Work constructively with multi disciplinary teams and statutory and voluntary agencies.
    2. Maintain an up to date professional portfolio in line with continuous professional development.
    3. To be aware of and adhere to company’s policies and procedures.
    4. Act as the service user’s advocate when the situation demands it.
    5. Be aware of the policy on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and act accordingly.
    Where necessary relevant training in the operation of new or unfamiliar equipment, software or procedures will be provided or arranged.
